The Great Loss of 1755
One of the most devastating events for the Crown Jewels occurred in 1755, with the great Lisbon earthquake that destroyed the Paço da Ribeira, the Portuguese royal residence. Many jewels were lost or stolen, and recovery took many years.
The Rebirth of the Crown Jewels
With the Portuguese court moving to Brazil under King John VI, new crown jewels were commissioned, including a new crown and scepter. In 2002, during an exhibition of the Crown Jewels in The Hague, six pieces were stolen, including a 135-carat diamond. The Dutch government paid six million euros to the Portuguese government in compensation, but the jewels were never recovered.
