The Amália Rodrigues House Museum:
A Journey through the Life of the Fado Diva

At door number 193 on Rua de S. Bento, in Lisbon, there is a sacred place for lovers of music, Portuguese culture, and Fado: the Casa Museu Amália Rodrigues. In this intimate and exciting space, visitors have the opportunity to experience the House and legacy of the legendary Queen of Fado, Amália Rodrigues, up close, whose voice has immortalized itself in the hearts of the Portuguese and all who were lucky enough to hear her.

The Amália Rodrigues Museum House: A Sanctuary of the Fadista’s Memory

The Amália Rodrigues House Museum was inaugurated on July 23, 2001, thus fulfilling one of the fado singer's most heartfelt desires: to open the doors of her home to the public and share her most intimate and personal side with them. For 50 years, this house museum was Amália's home, the place where she lived, loved, and raised, and also where she spent her last days. Transformed into a museum after she died in 1999, Amália's house maintains its original environment and invites visitors to immerse themselves in the unique atmosphere of Portuguese symbols that was once the stage for Amália's emotions and fado.

A visit to Casa da Amália

When taking the first steps through the Casa Museu Amália Rodrigues, we are transported to the world of the fado singer. In the Hall, we find old tiles and traditional tapestries that create a welcoming and Portuguese atmosphere, while we see a portrait of Amália on one of the walls.

Entering the Dining Room, we can notice English furniture, jewelry with Italian crystals, and pieces of porcelain from Companhia das Indias that reveal the refined taste of the Fado artist.

Upon entering the most intimate space, the bedroom, we find dresses worn on stage as well as traditional jewelry and jewelry accessories while, in the Living Room, there is a baby grand piano, Portuguese guitars, and other instruments.

Every corner of the Casa Museu Amália Rodrigues reveals a little of her personality and her passion for music. It is a magical place that allows us to get to know the "Queen of Fado" better.

The Amália Rodrigues Foundation Museum House: A Tribute to the Eternal Fado Singer

Being more than a museum, the Casa-Museu Fundação Amália Rodrigues is a tribute to the greatness of one of the greatest artists that Portugal has ever seen born. Managed by the Amália Rodrigues Foundation, created by the will expressed in the fado singer's will, the house museum preserves not only the material objects that belonged to Amália but also her essence, her spirit, and her voice, which continue to echo in hearts of all who hear it.

This being the greatest Fado talent ever in Portugal, Amália Rodrigues was buried in the National Pantheon, an honor given to the great names in the history of Portugal. However, it is in the Casa Museu that her presence is more tangible, closer, as if the fado singer herself were there, welcoming her visitors with her unmistakable smile.

Amália Rodrigues: A Life Dedicated to Fado

Born in 1920 in the city of Lisbon, she demonstrated an exceptional talent for music from an early age, winning over the Portuguese public and quickly becoming one of the most important figures in Portuguese music. After decades of a brilliant career, Amália raised fado to new levels of recognition and prestige, taking this artistic expression beyond the borders of Portugal and winning the hearts of audiences around the world.
